Victorian & Baldwin Park
Following the Civil War, crowded living conditions downtown and technological advances such as paved streets, a streetcar system, and electricity promoted the development of suburban residences. When the streetcar system was installed in 1869, real estate developers followed its tracks, building sturdy frame houses with exuberant architectural details in large numbers between 1870 and 1910. This area, now called the Victorian District, was designated a National Register District in 1974. It is bounded by Gwinnett Street to the north, Anderson Lane to the south, East Broad Street, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to the west. While easily walkable to all of downtown’s shopping and entertainment, this area is centered on Forsyth Park, Savannah’s ultimate gathering spot, hosting festivals, concerts, athletics, and a Saturday morning farmers market.
